Guest
Is it just me, or are some Wordle answers borderline criminal in their obscurity? One day it’s “PLANE” and the next it’s “RUDDY” or “JOUST”—words I haven’t heard since medieval times. While the game is fun, it can also be frustrating when it throws in an unusual or dated word that feels out of place in modern vocabulary.

I’ve been trying to understand how these words are selected. Are they truly random from a set pool, or curated based on difficulty levels, themes, or word frequency? I’ve been exploring this topic using tools like the Wordle Answer archive, where I can review past puzzles and analyze patterns. Some weeks feel like they have themed words (e.g., nautical terms), while others seem like a scattershot of syllables.

In an attempt to prepare myself better, I’ve also started referencing the 5 Letter Words List to become more familiar with uncommon words, especially those with odd vowel placements, repeated letters, or rare consonants.

What I’d love to know from you all is:

Do you also notice a pattern of obscure words popping up now and then?

Is there a way to pre-emptively prepare for this, or is it just the nature of the game?

Should Wordle stick to more common words to keep things fair?

Let’s talk about the line between “challenging” and “obscure for the sake of it.” Maybe with shared insight, we can demystify some of these outlier answers.
